The development of the teeth begins in the 6th foetal week. 20 primary tooth buds are already in the jawbones by the time of birth. Usually the first teeth to erupt are the two frontal incisors. These erupt around the sixth month after the birth.
A healthy child has 20 milk teeth; a healthy grownup has 32 permanent teeth. The shapes of the teeth are inheritable, and the shape is an important factor when talking about caries. Teeth with high dental cusps and deep dental grooves have an increased liability to develop caries.
